Grazing in Relation to Runoff and Erosion on Some Chaparral Watersheds of Central Arizona

چکیده
Chaparral lands of central Arizona are important for water production. They are also used as grazing lands for livestock and as habitat for wildlife. An understanding of the relation of grazing to runoff and erosion is thus essential to the development of management systems for sustained high yields. This paper reports the effects of grazing on runoff and erosion as determined on four experimental watersheds called Natural Drainages A, B, C, and D. These watersheds were located on the Sierra Ancha Experimental Forest about 40 miles north of Globe, Arizona. Previous studies in the Southern Rockies suggest that grazing heavy enough to reduce the perennial grass cover results in decreased infiltration, increased surface flow of water, and additional erosion. For example, on the Rio Grande watershed, destruction of, and change in, plant cover from improper grazing was found to increase flash floods during the summer rainy season, which resulted in destructive erosion and silting of channels, reservoirs, and irrigation works (Cooperrider and Hendricks, 1937). Similar conclusions were reached with regard to improper grazing of watersheds along the Little Colorado River in northeastern Arizona (Thornthwaite et al., 1942). More recent and detailed studies suggest how grazing of a

متن کاملEvaluating the Impact of Watershed Management Activities on Upstream Urban Areas (Case study: Tehran 5th and 22nd District Upper Watersheds)
One of the problems of some cities in the country, especially those in the vicinity of mountainous watersheds, is the containment and control of runoff, erosion and sedimentation that results in many damages to downstream facilities and infrastructure each year. Watershed operations have been proposed for years to reduce and mitigate destructive effects, and some measures have been taken ...
متن کاملKinematic runoff and erosion model efficiency assessment for hydrological simulation of semi-arid watersheds
Hydrologic modeling of semi-arid watersheds is imperative for the development of appropriate water and soil conservation plans. In the current study, the efficiency of Kinematic Runoff and Erosion model-version 2 (K2) model was used to evaluate water discharge and sediment load simulation of Bar watershed, located in the north-eastern part of Iran. The K2 model relies on the kinematic wave appr...

Erosion plots are basically used for studying erosion processes and many related problems. However, the possibility to extend the results of experimental plots to surrounding watersheds is rarely taken into account. In the present study, an attempt was made to study on the accuracy of soil erosion plots in estimation of runoff and sediment yield from small watersheds. Towards this attempt, 12 ...

Soil erosion as a one of the biggest environmental problems worldwide, is threatening both ecosystem health and food security. This case study conducted in Khamsan paired watersheds aimed to compare runoff volume and sediment yields from 51 natural rainfall events on 18 USLE’s standard plots, where they had installed on the different conditions in the term of enclosure and aspect. Fa...
